How to choose a route type
IEPL, relay and direct routes are not simple quality rankings. They represent different path designs, with different trade-offs in cost, stability and suitable use cases.
IEPL routes use a more controlled carrier path across the international segment, reducing unpredictable detours on the public internet. They are generally better suited to tasks sensitive to connection continuity, such as ongoing meetings, remote desktops, long uploads or downloads, reliable access to overseas work platforms and online tools that need to maintain a session.
These routes typically cost more than ordinary paths, so they are best reserved for critical tasks rather than used all day simply because they say “IEPL.” If the local connection itself is unstable, IEPL cannot replace checks of your router, Wi-Fi signal or carrier link. It can optimize the international segment; it cannot fix the Wi-Fi in the next room when only one bar remains.

RELAY PATH
Relay routes
A relay route first sends the connection to a suitable entry point, then forwards it through a relay path to the destination region. Its value lies in avoiding some unreliable public-network segments while balancing cost and experience. For everyday browsing, streaming, AI tools and routine file transfers, a relay is often a practical default starting point.
A relay is not necessarily slower than a direct route. Network performance depends on the complete path, not the straight-line distance on a map. A well-designed relay path may be more stable than a direct route that takes frequent detours. Conversely, if the destination service is nearby, an extra relay may be unnecessary. Relay routes therefore work well for a “start here, then fine-tune based on results” strategy.

PUBLIC PATH
Direct routes
A direct route connects from the current network straight to the destination node with a simple path structure. It suits situations where the local network already reaches the destination smoothly. Direct routes are often used as backups, for light browsing or tasks requiring an exit in a specific region, and by users who know their network environment and are willing to compare entry points themselves.
Direct routes depend more heavily on the actual public-internet path. Results can vary by carrier, region and time of day, so distance between cities alone is not enough to draw a conclusion. If a direct route is stable in your environment, it can be a simple and effective choice. If pages load intermittently, video buffers repeatedly or sessions drop, compare it with a relay or IEPL route in the same region.
